UK Box Office February 27-March 1: MARIGOLD HOTEL Reserves First Place, FOCUS Doesn't Have its Eye on the Prize

3:26 PM

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel took first place this weekend with just under $5.8 million. Focus opened in 3rd with around $2.9 million.

Other new entries in the Top 10 came from The Boy Next Door which flopped into 7th place with around $625K. It Follows opened in 8th place to $570K.

The top 10 made approximately $18.92 million this weekend. That is down 15.45% on last weekend and also down 4.77% on the same weekend frame in 2014. This is very similar to last years result which is quite good for the film industry!

Debuting in first place this weekend is The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - it certainly didn't settle for second best! The film opened to just under $5.80 million which is up 64% on the first films opening weekend! The original went on to make over $32 million in the UK in 2012, with a higher opening and similar reviews, this film has a shot at reaching $40 million if it holds well!

In second place was last weeks (and the week before) winner, Fifty Shades of Grey. That is down 51% on last weekend which is a much stronger hold than its second week drop (66%). The film made $3.46 million this weekend giving it a new UK total of $46.6 million. Fifty Shades really does have a shot at reaching $55-60 million!

The second highest new entry this week came from Focus. The film opened in 3rd place to $2.94 million - it is hard to tell whether this is good or bad for the film. If After Earth (Will Smith's last major film) is any comparison - that film opened in first place to $3.5 million which had a lot more negative reviews than Focus and only went on to make $9.7 million (disappointing for the debut). Focus should hold better than After Earth due to more mixed reviews - $8 million looks likely.

In 4th place is Big Hero 6. The Disney animation took in $1.87 million this weekend which is down approximately 53% - this is the films steepest drop to date. The film has now made over $27 million in the UK and should pass $30 million before the end of its run which is similar to Tangled ($32 million) and Wreck-it Ralph ($36 million).

In 5th is Shaun the Sheep Movie. The film took in $1.55 million this weekend - I am actually really surprised that Shaun is still in the top 5! However, this is the steepest drop so far - falling 59%. Both this and Big Hero 6 have suffered steep drops which could be town to the kids being back at school. Shaun has now made over $17.9 million in the UK and should pass $20 million before the end of its run.

6th place was given to Kingsman: The Secret Service this weekend. The film made $1.03 million this weekend which is down 45% on last weekend. The film has now made over $22.3 million in the UK and should finish with just below $30 million.

The Boy Next Door flopped in the UK this weekend - this isn't surprising thanks to negative reviews and a very small marketing campaign. The film took in just under $625K. This is quite disappointing and suggests that the movie will fall off quickly. Its at Number 7 this week but expect it to be out of the top 10 next week. $1 million is possible for the film if it has ok weekday numbers.

It Follows had quite a limited release in the UK this week and debuted in 8th place. The film took in around $570K. This is also hard to tell whether it is a good or bad number for the film. With really strong reviews (Sadly, I didn't like it) but no so strong word of mouth, It Follows may slip to 10th place next weekend and may pass the $1 million mark.

In 9th is The Wedding Ringer. The film made $566K which is down 63% on last weekend - not a very good hold. The film has now made over $2.7 million in the UK which suggests that it had strong (ish) week numbers. However, expect this week to be its last in the top 10. However, $4 million is a likely finishing point.

Rounding out the top 10 is The Theory of Everything. The film took in around $512K which is down just 26% on last weekend - this strong hold is thanks to Eddie Redmayne's Oscar win. Everything has now earned over $31.7 million in the UK and has a shot at reaching around $33 million by the end of its run.

Look Out for STILL ALICE Next Weekend!
Other Releases include CHAPPIE & UNFINISHED BUSINESS

DVD Sales - Fury is the Number 1 DVD. Annabelle opened at Number 4. Serena opened at Number 25.
