Sinister 2 (2015)

Be Careful. Children at Play.
Sinister 2 is the sequel of the 2012 film and is directed by Ciaran Foy (Citadel). The film stars James Ransone (Sinister, Inside Man), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight's Tale, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Robert Daniel Sloan and Dartanian Sloan (Hick). "A young mother and her twin sons move into a rural house that's marked for death". So Sinister was a disturbing and very scary movie, will Sinister 2 be able to match or surpass those heights?
I have to say before I kind of tear the movie apart that I really truly love the concept of the Sinister films and believe they are some of the scariest concepts out there. The concept was executed almost perfectly in the first but here, unfortunately I can't really say the same. However, this film hasn't put me off of the franchise and I would happily sit through a third movie in this series.

For all of the rating criteria, Sinister 2 never really quite hits the mark. Yes the film is watchable and most films are unless they are truly horrible. However, when going deeper into this Sinister 2 is quite a disturbing and uncomfortable film to watch - it is like the director wants audiences to feel joy and amaze when watching the 'kill films' which are disgusting. The whole concept is horrific and thats what sets these films up to be scary. I probably wouldn't rush to watch Sinister 2 again and would rather watch the first one as it is far superior
Watchability Score: 0.5/1

The acting in the film is also pretty mediocre. James Ransone is the only returning main member from the original movie and he is ok but some moments just felt like he was trying too hard or trying to imitate Jake Gyllenhaal's performance in Prisoners. Shannyn Sossamon isn't too great either - Ok, I don't think she deserves a Razzie or anything but she could have been a lot better - she should go and take tips from Rose Byrne. The twins were actually examples of better child actors that I have seen - however, I was never really scared of them and to be honest, the only thing I was scared of the whole film was Bughuul.
Acting Score: 0.5/1

I wouldn't say Sinister 2 is likeable because its hard for a horror movie to actually be likeable. However, Insidious 2 & 3 were a little more likeable due to the fact that they looked at topical issues of today - Ok, this film looked at abusive relationships but I feel there was no movement or stand against the issue - it just exposed it a bit more. Sinister 2 did have a few scary moments that did make you jump and the whole concept is generally quite scary so I suppose it isn't the worst horror movie I've ever seen (I found this a lot scarier than Unfriended and Ouija).
Likability Score: 0.5/1

Horror films from blumhouse are cheaply made which means you shouldn't expect great special effects or any fancy cinematography. I do give this film merit for its look though as the 'kill films' looked realistic despite being horrible to watch - the dated filter that was inserted and the actual occurrences on screen were all good. Even the scene where people where attacked by crocodiles looked realistic! However, the look of Sinister 2 probably isn't the best for squeamish people.
Look Score: 0.5/1

The story for Sinister 2 wasn't that original and didn't really add much information to what was gained in the first film. I liked how the film took place from the child's point of view rather than the parents/investigators. I really think the film does need to explain a lot of things though like how the kids manage to tie parents who are likely to put up a fight. The random ghost children were also strange and their purpose of showing the films was never quite explained. Sinister 2 has a very sloppy story and knows how cliche it is as it already expects its audience to assume and know everything. What I did like about the story is that SPOILER: the family you were routing for didn't all get killed off which did happen in the first film which did annoy me.
Story Score: 0.5/1

Sinister 2 is a big step down from the far superior Sinister. The film is acted not badly but not greatly but is pretty scary. The film doesn't really add anything new to the Sinister universe which a sequel should always do. The story is sloppy and a lot is expected of the audience. Some may even call this film out of order for trying to entertain audiences by showing them different gruesome ways that people can be murdered. I am disappointed with this film as it certainly wasn't Sinister, it was just ok.
