UK Box Office September 11-13: MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS Taken Out by LEGEND

2:28 PM

Surprisingly taking the top spot this weekend was the Tom Hardy flick Legend - Hardy definitely is on a comeback box office wise! That left Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials having to settle for second place. The sequel did however improve on its predecessor which I suppose is a good thing. The Visit took third place.

Also opening in the top 10 was Irrational Man which took 10th place. Secret Cinema returned to the top 10 at number 9.

Here is the top 10:

1. Legend - $7.97 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $7.97 million
2. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials - $4.30 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $4.30 million
3. The Visit - $1.58 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $1.58 million
4. Straight Outta Compton - $967,788 - Week 3 - Down 54% - Total: $10.91 million
5. Inside Out - $934,491 - Week 8 - Down 17% - Total: $56.52 million
6. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - $464,165 - Week 7 - Down 41% - Total: $31.53 million
7. Pixels - $418,447 - Week 5 - Down 31% - Total: $12.15 million
8. No Escape - $390,571 - Week 2 - Down 60% - Total: $1.87 million
9. Empire Strikes Back - $390,175 - Week 15 - RE-ENTRY - Total: $8.46 million
10. Irrational Man - $302,756 - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $302,756

The top 10 made approximately $17.71 million this weekend which is up a whopping 114% on last weekend. This is also up 53% on the same time frame last year which saw openings from The Boxtrolls and Pride.

Taking the top spot this weekend was not The Scorch Trials! Legend surprised and took in a very good $7.97 million. Now, the film was released on the Wednesday which means this number includes 5 days instead of 3 but this opening puts Legend as the 10th highest one this year. Now, the success of Legend is a mystery - the film has middling reviews - 58% on Rotten Tomatoes and there was that big scandal about the 2 star review on the poster. However, you know what they say, any press is good press. Legend's star Tom Hardy also featured on Alan Carr: Chatty Man which may have persuaded people to go. To add to all this surprise, the film was rated 18 by the BBFC which means the smallest amount of people possible could see it. I would probably suggest that Legend's surprise success is down to the story and location (London). Legend will probably have a solid run from here and should close between $15 and 20 million.

If you would have asked me last week, I would have said that The Scorch Trials would take the top spot no matter what. However, like Insurgent was beat by Home, this was beaten by Legend. Now, its not all bad news for the franchise as this films $4.30 million opening is around $1 million higher than the firsts ($3.28 million). The first film had quite a solid run and went on to make $13 million in the UK. If Scorch Trials also has a similarly solid run, it could go on to earn around $16 million. The film also has similar reviews to the Maze Runner which indicates a similar performance.

Another new entry opened in third place which was The Visit. The horror-comedy flick took in $1.58 million which is quite good for a film that was marketed to look bad. The film has had quite strong reviews for a horror movie which suggests it could perform quite well. I would believe that The Visit will probably close with $4-6 million by the end of its run.

Dropping 54% this weekend was the previous reigning champion of the box office - Straight Outta Compton. The music biopic took in $968,000 this weekend and has currently made $10.91 million in the UK. The movie has been dropping reasonably steeply which has kind of gone unnoticed due to how quiet the industry was at the end of August/beginning of September. Straight Outta Compton will probably close with around $13-15 million.

Sliding to 5th place this weekend but only dropping 17% was Inside Out. The critically acclaimed animation has had a really solid run so far - 8 weeks in the top 5! The film made $934,000 this weekend and could possibly be sitting on top of Compton next weekend. The film has currently made $56.5 million in the UK and is on track to close with around $60 million.

6. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - Another solid drop for the critically acclaimed spy blockbuster. Prediction: $33-35 million.

7. Pixels - The biggest question on this chart is...why is Pixels having such solid holds? Prediction $13.5-15 million.

8. No Escape - So maybe this film wasn't a breakout hit, plummeting 60% in its second weekend. Prediction: $2.5-4 million.

9. Empire Strikes Back - After a few weeks outside of the top 10, Secret Cinema is back! Prediction: $9-10 million.

10. Irrational Man - Assuming it had a limited release but it still caused little heat in the chart. Prediction: $0.9-1.2 million.
