Taking the top spot this weekend was the first big release of Awards season: Everest. The film summited the chart and took in $4.85 million. No other films debuted within the top 5.

Also opening in the top 10 was A Walk in the Woods which took 8th, Battle of Britain which took 9th and Bill which took 10th.

Here is the top 10:

10. Bill - $340,940 - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $340,940

The top 10 made approximately $14.32 million this weekend which is down 19.2% on last weekend. However, this is up 43.9% on the same time frame last year which saw no major openings.

Everest climbed to the top of the box office this weekend taking in a surprisingly strong $4.85 million. If you had asked me last weekend where I would think Everest would open, I would of said around 3rd place - however, after seeing the movie, I can say that this film deserves the top spot. Everest has strong reviews - 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also has strong word of mouth. Everest has been spotlighted in the US this weekend for having an impressive IMAX only debut. Everest is the first proper awards contender to be released widely this season. I'd expect Everest to close with around $13-15 million.

Taking second place this weekend was last weeks winner Legend. The Tom Hardy flick dropped a steep 53% in its second weekend. The film took in $3.76 million and has currently made $15.32 million in the UK. Legend's reviews are getting worse as time goes on - its Rotten Tomatoes rating seems to be consistently syncing. Legend is still doing remarkably for a film that is an 18. Legend is on track to close with above $20 million.

In third place this weekend is Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. The film took in $2.32 million, dropping 48%. This drop is much steeper than what the first film dropped in its second weekend - this weekends number is also on par with what the first film made in its second weekend which could suggest that Maze Runner will close with around $13-15 million. After its US debut, the film went 'Rotten' on Rotten Tomatoes which may have put audiences off.

The Visit dropped 53% which is to be expected for a horror film. The film took in $746K and has so far made $3.07 million in the UK. The Visit has also gone rotten on Rotten Tomatoes but is only borderline - it is also very rare for a horror to be fresh so a high rotten is a pretty good sign. The Visit is on track to close with $4-5 million.

Staying in the top 5 after 9 weeks of release is Inside Out. The critically acclaimed animation took in $672K which is down just 28% on last weekend. The film has so far made $57.44 million in the UK and still has a chance at reaching $60 million before the end of its UK run.

6. Straight Outta Compton - another steeper drop for the music biopic. Prediction: $13-15 million.

7. Empire Strikes Back - an 11% increase for Secret Cinema - I wonder what film they will do next?. Prediction: $10-11 million.

8. A Walk in the Woods - the film got lost amongst stiff competition. Prediction: $0.9-1.1 million.

9. Battle of Britain - Minimal marketing but still got a top 10 debut! Prediction: $0.9-1.1 million.

10. Bill -  Horrible Histories cracks the top 10! Prediction: $0.9-1.2 million.
