UK Box Office December 11-13: MOCKINGJAY Enjoys the Thrown for the Fourth (& Final) Week during a Quiet Weekend as the World Waits for STAR WARS

1:46 PM

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 continued to reign this weeks box office - the film spent a 4th and final weekend at the box office as the world waits for The Force to Awaken. No films opened within the top 10 - however, all films saw generally light drops.

Here are the top 10 films this week:

1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 - $1.94 million - Week 4 - Down 42% - Total: $38.40 million
2. The Good Dinosaur - $1.92 million - Week 3 - Down 25% - Total: $10.16 million
3. Spectre - $1.22 million - Week 7 - Down 35% - Total: $138.59 million
4. Bridge of Spies - $1.18 million - Week 3- Down 27% - Total: $8.18 million
5. Christmas With The Coopers - $703,888 - Week 2 - Down 31% - Total: $2.16 million
6. The Lady in the Van - $484,363 - Week 5 - Down 31% - Total: $16.96 million
7. Black Mass - $439,874 - Week 3 - Down 38% - Total: $4.46 million
8. Krampus - $410,441 - Week 2 - Down 34% - Total: $1.44 million
9. Carol - $361,629 - Week 3 - Down 30% - Total: $2.67 million
10. Victor Frankenstein - $243,381 - Week 2 - Down 62% - Total: $1.22 million

The top 10 made approximately $8.89 million million this weekend which is down 34.7% on last weekend but is also down a huge 66.9% on the same time frame last year which saw a very strong opening from the final Hobbit film. However, this extremely quiet weekend is only the calm before the storm which will see what is looking to be a huge opening from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Taking a final victory lap at the UK Box Office this weekend was Mockingjay - Part 2. In its 4th straight week at number 1, the film dropped a light 42%. The film took in $1.94 million this weekend and has so far made $38.4 million in the UK. Mockingjay is likely to see a steep drop next weekend as its screens are taken over by Star Wars (pretty much every film will see a steep drop next weekend). Even though Mockingjay - Part 2 opened lighter than the previous entries, it has done remarkably well to hold the number 1 spot for so long. The film will probably close with around $45 million by the end of its UK run.

The Good Dinosaur also sat at number 2 for another week. The film took in $1.92 million which is down just 35% - it wouldn't surprise me if next weekend, this remained at number 2 and Mockingjay slipped to 3rd. The Good Dinosaur has so far made $10.16 million - the film has a good chance at closing with around $15 million which is actually quite weak for an animated film - especially Disney/Pixar.

Spectre held on to the number 3 spot this weekend for another week, taking in $1.22 million. In its 7th week of release, the film managed to drop just 35% - Spectre has done incredibly well in the UK but like all films, will suffer next weekend. Spectre has so far made $138.59 million in the UK and is currently the highest grossing film of the year in the UK - the question is, will it and how long will it take Star Wars to overtake it?

Remaining at number 4 this weekend was Bridge of Spies - the Tom Hanks drama took in $1.18 million which his down just 27%. The film is holding incredibly well which isn't surprising considering the strong reviews, awards buzz and positive word of mouth that the film has. Bridge of Spies has so far made $8.18 million - it is nearly just as successful as The Good Dinosaur in the UK - who would have predicted that that would happen? Bridge of Spies will definitely surprise $10 million and may have a shot at hitting $15 million.

Surprisingly, Christmas with the Coopers held up really well this weekend, even though last weeks number consisted of Monday-Sunday. The film took in $705,000 which is down just 31% - I think that is the best hold we have seen this year for a film that had previews and a Monday-Sunday release period in its first weekend. Coopers has currently made $2.16 million in the UK and is on track to close with around $5 million - even though it will see a hit next weekend, the film may perform well over the Christmas holidays for non Star Wars fans.

6. The Lady in the Van - Up a spot and down just 31% in its 5th week. Prediction: $18-19 million.

7. Black Mass - A much better hold for the film which saw a very steep second week drop. Prediction: $5.2-6 million.

8. Krampus - Possibly the best second week hold for a horror film this year. Prediction: $2-3 million.

9. Carol - The awards contender climbs a place and sees another strong hold. Prediction: $3-4 million.

10. Victor Frankenstein - The steepest drop in the top 10 for probably the worst film in the top 10. Prediction: $1.5-2 million.
