UK Box Office December 25-27: STAR WARS Continues Reign, PEANUTS, DADDY'S HOME Debut Strong

9:29 AM

Star Wars: The Force Awakens kept its place at number 1 this weekend, despite a steep 70% drop. However, it is important to note that this weekends box office is only really the 26th and 27th of December as cinemas in the UK are closed on Christmas day - this is the explanation for the majority of films seeing steep drops. The Peanuts Movie debuted with a strong $5.39 million - that is including a handful of previews before its release however. Daddy's Home took 3rd place with a solid $2.41 million and In The Heart of the Sea (despite having the biggest budget out of the new entries) took 4th with just below $850,000.

No other films managed to crack the top 10.

Here are the top 10 films this week:

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $15.06 million - Week 2 - Down 70% - Total: $97.66 million
2. The Peanuts Movie - $5.39 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $5.39 million
3. Daddy's Home - $2.41 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $2.41 million
4. In The Heart of the Sea - $845,356 - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $0.85 million
5. The Good Dinosaur - $591,183 - Week 5 - Down 55% - Total: $14.95 million
6. Dilwale - $517,271 - Week 2 - Down 52% - Total: $2.45 million
7. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 - $337,234 - Week 6 - Down 57% - Total: $40.73 million
8. Spectre - $314,391 - Week 9 - Down 29% - Total: $138.46 million
9. Bajirao Mastani - $283,776 - Week 2 - Down 36% - Total: $1.13 million
10. Sisters - $211,708 - Week 2 - Down 88% - Total: $2.73 million

The top 10 made approximately $25.97 million million this weekend (58% being Star Wars) which is down 54.7% on last weekend but is up 12.14% on the same time frame last year. There is no major entries now at the box office until the new year so it will be interesting to see how The Force Awakens holds and how long it can stay at number 1.

Staying at number 1 for a second week in a row is Star Wars: The Force Awakens - the film took a steep 70% drop in its second weekend - taking in $15.06 million. The film has now made $97.66 million in the UK and will definitely crack the $100 million mark. The Force Awakens has remarkable reviews and generally unanimous audience approval. It will be interesting to see how the film holds in coming weeks - if this week is anything to go by, it suggests that The Force Awakens is quite front-loaded? I would say The Force Awakens will definitely take in $150 million as it has this Christmas break on its side which will boost the ticket sales.

Impressing with a strong debut in second place is The Peanuts Movie - the film took in $5.39 million. This number does include a few weekends of previews but nevertheless, it is still a strong hold. The Peanuts Movie has solid reviews and this debut is quite impressive when you take into account that the whole Peanuts brand isn't as well known in the UK as it is in the US. If the film holds well, it should be able to reach $15 million by the end of its run.

Another solid debut came from Daddy's Home which took 3rd place this weekend. The comedy took in $2.41 million which is higher than the debuts of Get Hard ($2.1), The Gambler ($0.6) and Pain & Gain ($1.6). The film should hold well over the Christmas holiday as it is really the only light-hearted film that anyone over 12 can see. The film doesn't have great reviews which may be something that isn't in the films favour but Daddy's Home should definitely be able to make over $7 million in the UK.

The weakest debut this week came from In The Heart of the Sea which is also the film which has the biggest budget out of all of the new releases. The film took in a weak $845,000 - this is a very low number for a film with a $100 million budget. This weak debut also confirms that Chris Hemsworth does not have star power. With strong holds, the film could reach $2-2.5 million - however, reviews are mostly negative to mixed so that could be unlikely.

Closing the top 5 is The Good Dinosaur - the film dropped 55% in its 5th weekend of release. The film took in $590,000 and has so far made $14.95 million in the UK - this steep drop will partly be down to the Christmas day block but also The Peanuts Movie. The Good Dinosaur is definitely on the low end of Pixar's scale and could reach $20 million if it holds well over the Christmas holidays.

6. Dilwale - The film saw an expected 50%+ drop in its second weekend. Prediction: $3-3.5 million.

7. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 - Another big drop for the final entry in the franchise in its sixth weekend. Prediction: $43-45 million.

8. Spectre - A sea of steep drops and Spectre holds well. Prediction: $140-150 million.

9. Bajirao Mastani - Even though it had a smaller debut last week, this Bollywood flick held better than Dilwale in its second weekend. Prediction: $1.7-2.2 million.

10. Sisters - An almost 90% second week drop - the down side to previews. Prediction: $3-3.5 million.
