UK Box Office February 19-21: DEADPOOL Kills It For Second Week, HOW TO BE SINGLE Debuts Well

Triple 9 was the only other new film to crack the top 10, taking 6th place with a solid $1.1 million.

The top 10 made approximately $22.76 million this weekend which is down 36.4% on last weekend and is up 1.99% on the same time frame last year which saw a huge second week drop for Fifty Shades of Grey.
Deadpool continued to dominate the UK Box Office, sticking at number 1, with a 59% second week drop to $7.99 million. Fifty Shades of Grey saw a 66% second week drop the same time last year so it is nice to see Deadpool hold better as it deserves to. The film dropped just like your average Summer blockbuster would - the hold wasn't remarkable but it wasn't a travesty either. Deadpool has had very positive reviews and word of mouth which should help to keep it around for a while. The film has so far made $36.29 million in the UK and should be able to crack $50 million by the end of its UK run. There is little competition next weekend so as long as it sees a good hold, there's no reason for why it can't make it a third weekend at number 1.
Surprisingly seeing a fantastic second week hold is Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. Critics may hate it but because it is the latest family film, it really benefited from half term. The film took in $4.98 million this weekend taking its UK total to $18.45 million. The film is not far from surpassing Chipwrecked or the first film - it may do so by next week or the week after. The Road Chip should be able to crack $30 million and may even be able to reach $35 million - a really strong hit in the UK which is surprising because this film has underperformed in most countries.
The highest debut this week came from How To Be Single. The rom-com took in $2.63 million which is a pretty solid start. This number is helped by Valentine's Day previews. How To Be Single has opened quite strongly which is probably down to Rebel Wilson stealing the BAFTAs and The Graham Norton Show the weekend prior to its release. The rom-com market is also very empty at the moment so people will be excited to get one. How To Be Single has received mixed reviews and word of mouth so it should be able to reach $6 million but it wouldn't surprise me if this film closed with around $5-8.5 million.
Moving up a spot this week is Goosebumps which saw a 20% increase thanks to half term. The film took in $1.84 million and has now made $10.60 million in the UK - surpassing the $10 million target I set for the film last week. Goosebumps will likely see solid/average holds from now on and may be able to hit $15 million by the end of its UK run - the film has received strong reviews and mostly positive word of mouth which should help it to stay around a little longer.
Rounding out the top 5 is Dad's Army which took in $1.15 million this weekend, dropping 38%. The film has now made $9.67 million in the UK - making it a solid performer. The film has received mostly negative reviews but mixed word of mouth which has likely helped it stay around longer than it should. The film may be able to hit $12-15 million by the end of its UK run.

7. Zoolander 2 - The worst hold in the top 10, the film saw a 64% drop. Prediction: $6.5-8 million.
8. The Revenant - That big BAFTA win helped this film to only see a 6% drop. Prediction: $31 million.
9. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 weeks in and the film still sees a superb hold. Prediction: $178 million.
10. Spotlight - Despite never taking in huge numbers, this film has performed very strongly. Prediction: $6.5-7.5 million.
